If you have never packed a mobile storage unit you may have a few questions about packing it.

Here are 5 hacks for packing a mobile storage unit:

1. Pack in boxes, plastic bins, and suitcases

Boxes, bins, and suitcases are great options to pack belongings in.  All of these choices are convenient, functional and easy to pack and stack.  Cardboard boxes are classic and cheap for the short term, while plastic bins are more expensive initially, they are reusable, making them more cost-effective in the long run.  Suitcases, especially rolling suitcases, are a great option for heavier items such as books, ornaments and the like.

2.  Fill and maximize space in the unit.

When packing belongings into a mobile storage unit it is important to pack to fill and maximize space.  A great method is to create wall like layers, filling the unit from bottom to top.  Make sure heavy items are packed first, on the bottom and with weight distributed evenly throughout.  Also, you can utilize mattresses to create padding for more fragile belongings.  To BEST maximize the use of space in the unit, think “Tetris”.

3. Securing and protecting Items

By filling and maximizing space you are one step closer to securing and protecting your items. There are a couple of other ways to ensure belongings are protected and secure.  First, make sure to label boxes that contain fragile items. Fragile items should be packed in a box or bin and packaged with protective materials.  The fragile boxes should then be placed strategically in the unit.  Remember, do not pack fragile boxes on the bottom.  For extra security, there are also hooks within most portable units.  These hooks can be used to secure belongings with tie downs, ratchet straps, tarp straps, or rope.

4. Pack first in – last out.

When first packing a portable storage unit, don’t forget, that whatever you pack in first will be the last unpacked.  Pack items that may be needed first, last and at the front of the unit.  Things like dishes, clothing, bathroom items, beds, bedding etc.

5. Give Yourself Time Before You Schedule a Pickup

If specific delivery days and times have been set for the mobile storage unit, and it isn’t ready or there is a delay, problems may arise.  If movers have been hired to help, you could end up paying more for their time than necessary.  Or, perhaps you end up waiting for items at your new location when you needed them yesterday.  Save yourself the hassle and remember to give yourself time in between deliveries and pickups.  Usually, 24 – 48hrs works best.  This gives room for error while being cost effective.
